2019-01-19 - New Year, New Drive: Cossatot Falls

We started our outing with breakfast at Alexa’s Creperie and had a great (and quite cold) drive to the Cossatot Falls area! We met some new friends, had a great time, and got a little snow-prise! #dadpun Pictures from the trip can be found on our Media page! We ended up cutting this drive shorter than planned because of the bitter cold and our 5 year old got car sick, but this is a trip we will certainly do again when the weather warms up a bit. This area is rich in activities for the whole family. There is camping, floating (probably for more advanced floaters), hiking, photo opportunities, and of course, all kinds of exploring to do! We will be back to the Cossatot River State Park !

2018-07-10 - A quick drive through the Jack Mountain WMA.

The family and I decided to get out of the house for just a little bit today. We took a quick roll through the Jack Mountain Wildlife Management Area, south of Hot Springs. It is mostly rocky, dirt roads with some washes, woods, and a vista. You can find some pictures and the sped up video of the trip on the Media page or at the Wandering Scoobies Youtube page . It is such a nice area with lots of roads to explore. Vehicles with at least 6" of ground clearance and some experience driving rutted roads is recommended. I also got to use my LP Adventure skid plate. It was totally my fault as I went out of my way to straddle that particular rock instead of going around it. I was trying to get a feel for my ground clearance... and I felt it. 😬

04/15/2018 - Last Trip Before Baby Gets Here #2 The road Home

After feasting on Fork & Crust the day before, we took our time heading back to Hot Springs. Our route took us through Ponca, one of our favorite areas, where it lightly snowed. Then we were off to Car Wash Falls. We had to back-track at Car Wash Falls because the river was too high for us to cross. Then we tried to stop by Haw Creek Falls, but it was closed due to the high water levels. A bathroom break at the scenic overlook and then back to the homestead. A very good trip! Awesome pictures HERE .

04/14/2018 - Last trip before Baby Gets Here #1 Trip to Rogers

This was the last hurrah before the new baby came along plus it was a great excuse to get out and relax since we probably wouldn’t get many opportunities for a while. We started the day with crepes and coffee at Alexa’s Creperie and ended the day with Fork & Crust because, let’s face it. It doesn’t get much better than that…and the pregnant wife wanted it. (LOL) We stopped and visited a couple of sites along the way and had a good time! Check out the Media page for some awesome pictures!

03/25/2018 - Lake Winona WIlderness ARea-MKII

Our second trip to the Lake Winona Wilderness Area was a great success! The weather even cooperated!. Thank you to all who joined us! This route was very similar to the one we took on 2/25/18, with the difference being we stuck to the more traveled roads. This route is passable by most stock cars and has some great vistas and a couple of short hikes. The hikes take you to a couple of former fire watch tower sites where you can enjoy some wonderful views! You can check out the pictures on our Media page. We may have some drone footage available of this trip soon. Keep an eye out for it!.

02/25/2018 - Lake Winona Wilderness Area

Hey everybody! We had a great drive that day! Lots of water, lots of mud, lots of scenery! The roads were in good condition, with the exception of the parts indicated in red above. If you want to drive that section, you really need a vehicle with at least 8.7" of ground clearance, comfortable approach and departure angles, and a little experience. My 2015 Outback is stock and did just fine, but I did bump my nose and rear a couple of times, mostly because of the mud holes. Other than that, it was awesome! So awesome, in fact, that we will be doing that one again on March 25, 2018! There is a lot to explore in this area, so check out the events page for details and the media page for some awesome pictures! UPDATE 03/25/2018: The section from the second circle on Reform Road to "Unnamed Road" is now gated and closed to vehicle traffic.

02/03/2018 - Gladstone Forest road

This was a great little drive from Mount Ida to Hot Springs by way of Gladstone Forrest Road. The route took us through mostly conifer forests with some great views, potential camping spots, and lots of side roads to explore. Gladstone Forest Road, the road from Highway 27 to Highway 7, was dirt/gravel and easily passable in any vehicle. Check out the pictures on our Instagram or Media pages!

11/25/2017 - Jack Mountain Wildlife Management Area

We took a little trip to explore the Jack Mountain Wildlife Management Area. There are a lot of other roads to explore in this area, so we will be going back to explore some more of this great pine and oak forest! This is the direct route through the area. You can see all of the roads I explored below. Most of the roads we drove today should easily be passable with the Crosstrek, Outback, or Forester. The area does have gates (yellow lines) that were open, but may not be at all times. We ended our trip with a wonderful two mile hike at Entergy Park. You can see some of the pictures at the 0-2 mile hike page.

10/07/2017 - Lake Sylvia and wonderful views!!

After spending the blazing hot summer cooped up and exploring this area on Google Earth, we decided to get out and about. The trip to Little Bear Lake was mostly for fun. The real meat of the trip was the drive from the Hollis Township to Lake Sylvia. Looking at the satellite images, there appeared to be some great views and we were not disappointed! The roads are dirt until you reach Lake Sylvia and there were some spectacular vistas and potential camping spots! We will most certainly be returning to this route to sight see and camp! Sadly, we took only two pictures on this trip, but they were awesome! You can see them on the media page!

06/03/17 - Objective: Petit Jean!

For this drive we started by meeting up at Subaru of Little Rock . We visited and made some great new friends: Pete, Zack, and Annie! From there, we made our way though the back roads to Petit Jean State Park . After hanging out at the overlook we met up at Mather Lodge for a hike to the waterfall! (which was very nice!) After a nice drive and hike, we ended our day at CJ's Butcher Boy Burgers ! Check out some pictures on our Media page and some info on the hike here!

03/18/17 - Our first group drive!

This was a nice drive that started with crepes and coffee at Alexa's Creperie . This drive visited some of my favorite places in the area like the Caney Creek Wilderness Area, Little Missouri Falls, and Camp Albert Pike. This route, as mapped, consists of dirt and paved roads, and should be suitable for all Subarus! Hop over to our Media page to check out pictures from the drive!

2/25/17 - A Short drive to Lake DeGray.

After breakfast at Alexa's Creperie , we decided to take Rubie on a short drive and check out some small recreational areas along the north side of Lake DeGray. We explored a few short, dirt roads in the curves of Highway 7 just south of Hot Springs too. After wandering around DeGray, we headed back to Hot Springs. These are all paved roads and are suitable for all Subarus!

01/07/17 - A little loop!?

This is a little loop drive that we drove from Highway 7 North around Lake Winona. The route shown is all rocky, dirt roads except for the small bit on Highway 7 and the area immediately around Lake Winona. The section marked with the dark line is very rough and not recommended (and may not be passable) for inexperienced drivers with Subarus that have less than 8.7 inches of ground clearance. There are plenty of alternative routes for Subies that don't have enough ground clearance. Have fun, be careful, and tread lightly!
